Abstract
The undisputed victory of the US-led coalition forces in the 1991 Gulf War added a new dimension to the preparation, conduct, and analysis of military operations. The defeat of the Iraqi army has not been adequately analyzed by the Russian and Armenian armed forces, heirs to the Soviet military school. Methods and materials: Using the memoirs of high-ranking military participants, reports, analytical materials from various think tanks, and comparative studies, the author examines the relationship between the 1991 Gulf War and the 44-day military operations of 2020, identifies missed strategic opportunities, and points out the shortcomings. Analysis: This article highlights and characterizes the innovations introduced by coalition forces during Operation Desert Storm, and also examines in detail the command and control systems and structural problems of the Iraqi armed forces. Results: The First Gulf War of 1991 demonstrated, through blood and iron, the superiority of Western military training over the Soviet military machine. The Armenian armed forces' failure to properly analyze the course of this war over nearly three decades led to significant shortcomings in army development, which were clearly demonstrated during the 44-day military operations.
