Abstract
<jats:p>This scientific study aims to comprehensively analyze the growth characteristics, morphological development indicators, physiological adaptability, and ecological stability of Platycladus orientalis under the sharply continental climatic conditions of Semey city. The Semey region is characterized by significant annual temperature fluctuations, severe winter frosts, spring and autumn frosts, and low precipitation coupled with drought during the summer months. Such climatic factors directly affect the vitality of urban greenery, growth rates, and ecological functioning. The main objective of the study is to determine the adaptability of Platycladus orientalis to these adverse natural factors, describe its morphological and physiological traits, and assess its potential for effective use in urban landscaping. During the research, tree height, trunk diameter, crown shape and density, annual growth rate, and the color and physiological condition of needles were monitored. Additionally, soil composition, moisture content, sunlight exposure, wind, and anthropogenic impacts were evaluated for their influence on plant development. The results demonstrated that Platycladus orientalis exhibits high resistance to drought, dust and gaseous pollution, and other urban environmental stressors. Although growth slows under extreme winter conditions, the species maintains its vitality, ecological stability, and ornamental value. These findings indicate that Platycladus orientalis can be effectively used to enhance Semey’s green spaces, improve ecological conditions, stabilize the environment, and support long-term urban landscaping projects. Moreover, the obtained data can serve as a practical basis for selecting climate-adapted seedlings, conducting ecological monitoring, and preserving biodiversity in urbanized areas. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of introducing resilient ornamental tree species into urban ecosystems experiencing increasing climatic stress due to global climate change.</jats:p>
