Abstract

<jats:p>The article examines the specific features of silvicultural and forest management practices aimed at restoring forest ecosystems in the Medeu tract (Medeu, Almaty) following the destructive windstorm of 2011, which caused significant damage to forest stands within the Ile-Alatau State National Natural Park. The consequences of this disturbance included widespread windthrow, disruption of stand structure, reduced biological stability, and intensified erosion processes on mountain slopes. Particular attention is given to evaluating the effectiveness of reforestation using Schrenk’s spruce (Picea schrenkiana), a key forest-forming species in the region that plays an important role in maintaining stable mountain ecosystems. The study analyzes the use of different types of planting material, including 4-year-old seedlings and large-sized saplings, with a comparative assessment of their survival rates, resistance to stress conditions, and growth dynamics in high-altitude environments. The role of accompanying species, particularly savin juniper (Juniperus sabina), is also considered, as it contributes to soil stabilization, reduces erosion, and creates favorable microclimatic conditions for the development of main forest species. The findings indicate that plant adaptation varies depending on planting material and site conditions. Special emphasis is placed on a set of agrotechnical measures aimed at improving reforestation efficiency, including soil loosening, improvement of soil moisture and aeration, weed control, and supplementary irrigation during the initial vegetation period. Proper implementation of these measures significantly increases plant survival and growth rates. The study highlights the importance of integrating reforestation with erosion control measures, especially on slopes prone to landslides. The use of locally adapted species, particularly Schrenk’s spruce, accelerates forest recovery, enhances ecosystem stability, and improves protective functions. The results confirm the need for an integrated, science-based approach to forest restoration in mountainous regions of Central Asia.</jats:p>
