Abstract

Not Too Early, Not Too Late: Career Guidance in Schools in the Era of Competency-Based Education (CBE) presents a comprehensive framework for career guidance that aligns with Kenya's Competency-Based Education (CBE) system. Challenging the traditional practice of introducing career guidance only at the point of subject or pathway selection, the book argues that career development is a continuous process beginning before formal schooling and extending throughout the learner's educational journey. Drawing on contemporary career development theories, empirical research, and the Kenyan education context, it provides practical strategies for parents, teachers, school leaders, counsellors, and policymakers to support learners at every stage, from home and early childhood through primary, junior, and senior school, including learners following the Stage-Based Pathway. The book emphasises identity formation, self-awareness, competency development, and informed career decision-making while integrating family, school, community, and faith-based institutions as key partners in learner development. It serves as both a conceptual and practical guide for fostering purposeful, inclusive, and lifelong career development in the era of Competency-Based Education.
