Abstract

The research purpose is to investigate the accumulation of heavy metals in the soil–plant system by the example of floodplain ecosystems of the Desna River (Bryansk Oblast). The study analyzed 55 plant samples of grass and slender tufted-sedge communities. The content of elements was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy after microwave digestion of samples, and ash content was determined by the dry ashing technique. The accumulation rate was assessed using the coefficients of biological absorption and accumulation as well as the Spearman's rank correlation analysis. Statistical data processing was performed using Statistica and MS Excel. It has been found that the distribution of elements content in plants does not follow the normal distribution law, which necessitated the use of median values for analysis. Based on median content in ash, the elements form the following series: Ni>As>Pb>Cr>Cd. No excesses of maximum permissible levels (MPLs) of heavy metals in plant dry matter were detected. Cadmium showed a significant negative correlation with pH (KCl), while arsenic showed a positive correlation with soil organic matter content. Biological absorption and accumulation coefficients for all elements were highly variable. Heavy accumulation was noted for cadmium and nickel, despite their traditional classification as weak uptake. Differences in the series of biological absorption and accumulation coefficients are explained by calculation specifics and theoretical imperfections of the coefficients. The study results indicate complex dynamics of heavy metal migration and accumulation in floodplain ecosystems, the absence of critical contamination of forage plants, and are in accord with previously published data for floodplain vegetation of other rivers in the region.
