The Bulgarian Category of Definiteness/Indefiniteness as a Matrix to Describe the Article System in Balkan Languages

<jats:p>The paper presents a program of research into the category of definite-ness/indefiniteness as part of the project of Functional Grammar of the Balkan Spra-chbund. Bulgarian, with its well-organized system of articles and fairly “stable mechanism of Bulgarian article usage” (Asenova 2002 (1989): 129), has been accepted as the base language for the study of the functions of definiteness markers in the Balkan languages and for the setup of a matrix establishing Balkan functional parallels within this grammatical category.</jats:p>
