<jats:p>This article analyzes declassified archival documents of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as sources for studying the history of the political elite of the Uzbek SSR. In particular, it examines CIA analytical materials concerning Soviet personnel policy, the anti-corruption campaign in the Soviet Union, the war in Afghanistan, and socio-political processes in Central Asia. Drawing on these documents, the article explores the political standing of Amin Niyazov, Nuriddin Mukhitdinov, Sabir Kamalov, Sharaf Rashidov, Inomjon Usmonkhodjaev, and other leaders of the republic, as well as their relations with Moscow, their position within the personnel system, and their role in political processes at the all-Union level.</jats:p>
