<jats:p>Andreas Deutsch: Archetypes of Sex. Unmasking Algae's Innocence, the Nathanael Pringsheim Revolution. GNT, Berlin, 2026.</jats:p> <jats:p>Andreas Deutsch’s ‘Archetypes of Sex’ reconstructs the life, work, and scientific legacy of Nathanael Pringsheim (1823–1894), a central figure in the transformation of nineteenth-century botany from a primarily descriptive and classificatory discipline into an experimental science of development, reproduction, and cellular processes. Situating Pringsheim among contemporaries such as Matthias Schleiden, Theodor Schwann, Charles Darwin, Alfred Russel Wallace, Ernst Haeckel, Rudolf Virchow, Hermann von Helmholtz, and Anton Dohrn, the book examines how new conceptual frameworks, improved microscopy, and changing institutional conditions reshaped the study of living organisms in the nineteenth century.</jats:p> <jats:p>The book places Pringsheim’s research on algae at the center of this transformation. His microscopic observation of fertilization in ‘Vaucheria sessilis’ in 1855 demonstrated that algae, long regarded as “lower” and possibly sexless organisms, possessed sexual reproduction. Pringsheim’s subsequent studies of green algae, including ‘Oedogonium’, ‘Pandorina’, and ‘Coleochaeta’, identified different forms of fertilization, gamete fusion, anisogamy, oogamy, and alternation between sexual and asexual generations. These observations led him to interpret sexuality as a general biological principle and to connect algal reproduction with broader questions of plant development, land-plant evolution, and the relation between gametophyte and sporophyte generations in mosses, ferns, and seed plants.</jats:p> <jats:p>Deutsch also examines the intellectual setting in which Pringsheim worked. The book traces the movement from static, creation-based models of nature and preformation theory toward dynamic understandings of ontogeny, phylogeny, evolution, and cellular development. Pringsheim appears as a transitional figure: methodologically committed to cell theory, microscopy, empirical observation, and mechanistic explanation, yet still influenced by Goethean morphology and the idealistic concept of archetypal form.</jats:p> <jats:p>Beyond Pringsheim’s scientific discoveries, the book reconstructs his career as an organizer of botanical research. It follows his education in Silesia, Breslau, Leipzig, and Berlin; the restrictions faced by Jewish scholars in Prussia; his private laboratory and teaching in Berlin; his professorship and founding of a plant physiology institute in Jena; his editorship of the ‘Jahrbücher für Wissenschaftliche Botanik’; and his central role in establishing the German Botanical Society. The narrative further situates him within the wider Jewish Pringsheim family, whose members contributed to chemistry, physics, mathematics, botany, and quantum theory, while also tracing the family’s persecution, exile, and losses under National Socialism.</jats:p> <jats:p>A further focus is Pringsheim’s institutional legacy on Helgoland. The book reconstructs the island’s emergence as a site of marine biological research, its political transfer from Britain to the German Empire in 1890, and Pringsheim’s role in promoting the Biological Institute Helgoland, opened in 1892. It also follows the later development of the institute, the North Sea Museum, the public aquarium, the botanical experimental garden, and subsequent commemorative initiatives.</jats:p> <jats:p>Finally, the book treats Pringsheim’s scientific illustrations as part of the epistemic practice of nineteenth-century biology. His drawings and color lithographs are interpreted not simply as images, but as instruments of observation, selection, normalization, and communication before the dominance of photographic and digital imaging. In combining biography, history of science, institutional history, visual culture, and biological explanation, ‘Archetypes of Sex’ presents Pringsheim’s work as a key episode in the emergence of modern experimental botany and in the historical understanding of sexuality as a fundamental principle of life.</jats:p>
