Abstract
“At the Interface of Theory and Practice: Arnold Sommerfeld and the Dispute over Wave Propagation in Wireless Telegraphy” by Walter Kaiser and Michael Eckert (German language)
The essay on Arnold Sommerfeld examines the dispute over wave propagation in wireless telegraphy. Sommerfeld’s theory of electromagnetic surface waves was meant to explain long radio ranges, but it came under pressure from observations, ionospheric models, Hermann Weyl’s critique, and a sign error. The result is a productive yet ambivalent interface between mathematical physics, technical practice, and theoretical authority.
