Abstract
<jats:p>Zu den Motiven der expressionistischen Malerei zählt auch die bescheidene Topfpflanze. Doch warum nimmt sich eine so umstürzlerische Strömung dieses häuslichen, ja spießig-bürgerlichen Motivs an? In diesem Aufsatz wird gezeigt, wie sich das Sujet bei näherem Hinsehen überraschend gut in einige Schlüsselthemen des Expressionismus einfügt, wie etwa dem Verhältnis zur Natur, Exotismus und Sterblichkeit. Amongst many others, the humble potted plant is a motif of Expressionist painting. But why would such a revolutionary movement deal with this domestic, even bourgeois subject? This essay shows how, on closer inspection, it fits surprisingly well into some of the key themes of Expressionism, such as the relationship to nature, exoticism, and mortality.</jats:p>
