‘What kind of a fool am I?’ A re-examination of foolish sons in the book of Proverbs

<jats:p>In the book of Proverbs, foolishness is presented as a richly layered category that carries profound theological weight, integrating ethical failure, deficient judgement and spiritual waywardness. Within the broader matrix of Israelite wisdom literature, the portrayal of the ‘foolish son’ operates as a pedagogical construct, illustrating patterns of self-destructive behaviour and highlighting their extensive personal and communal repercussions. This study critically examines selected texts from Proverbs that portray the foolish son, analysing his character traits, behavioural patterns and social outcomes. Attention is given to the pedagogical role of parents within the covenantal framework of wisdom instruction. Parental guidance in Proverbs is presented as foundational for cultivating wisdom, moral integrity and social stability, thereby safeguarding children from corruption, illegitimate gain and self-destructive conduct. Conversely, the rejection of both parental instruction and the fear of Yahweh results in shame, poverty, moral decay and communal disruption, bringing grief not only to the individual but also to the family unit. By employing the historical-critical method, this study situates the relevant texts within their ancient Israelite socio-religious context while also exploring their theological coherence within the broader wisdom corpus. The findings indicate that foolishness in Proverbs is fundamentally rooted in the neglect of the fear of Yahweh and the deliberate refusal of formative instruction. Contribution: The study concludes that obedience to parental wisdom and reverence for God remain indispensable pathways to moral flourishing and societal well-being in both ancient and contemporary contexts.</jats:p>
