Abstract

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Whether planning for well abandonment, wellhead maintenance, or well suspension during inclement weather and storms, time can be an operator's greatest adversary as they look to suspend a well keeping it stable and safe. Failure to maintain a reliable gas-tight seal in a wellbore can lead to a loss of well control and an unplanned release of hydrocarbons to the environment. This can be a major safety risk for operators and hazardous to the environment. When time is of the essence in these applications the simplicity of a bridge plug running and retrieval method utilizing jointed workstring or drill pipe manipulation only allows operators to quickly and efficiently suspend the well and avoid undue risks to personnel, operations and the environment. This paper introduces a novel V0 retrievable bridge plug and overshot that can be operated with minimal pipe manipulation and can adapt to retrieve multiple packers and plugs to minimize inventory needed on location. Additionally, the plug does not require left-hand rotation, which reduces the risk of accidental disconnection of the work string or bottomhole assembly. By utilizing this existing and proven running and retrieval method, assets can also be shared amongst various packers and bridge plug minimizing inventory needed on location. Capitalizing on the reliability and robustness of Halliburton's packers and subsurface control valves, the new retrievable bridge plug relies only on a drill pipe manipulation mechanism for running and retrieving. By reducing operational parameters to slack-off, set-down weight, and right-hand rotation only, the operator can abandon or suspend a well quickly and dependably. This plug underwent rigorous and extensive validation including API 11D1 V0 and API 19AC V3 qualifications to meet the ever-increasing industry need for V0 well abandonment. The novel retrievable bridge plug introduced in the work, features the dependable design of existing packers and subsurface control valves and combines it with the V0 gas tight barrier of a retrievable bridge plug to allow for effortless and dependable running, setting, and retrieval.</jats:p>
