The Communal Facilitator in Ubuntu and Creative Arts in ECE Teacher Education

<jats:p>Early childhood education in rural and peri-urban South Africa confronts persistent structural challenges: practitioner underqualification, resource poverty, curricular misalignment, and exclusion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems from official practice. The Child Support Grant, while materially significant, addresses poverty symptoms without restoring communal child-rearing traditions eroded by teenage motherhood, labour migration, and HIV and AIDS. This chapter per the authors argues that Ubuntu-inspired Creative Arts, grounded in Indigenous Knowledge Systems, constitutes a culturally legitimate and developmentally coherent response. Five practitioner vignettes from ECE centres in the Zululand district illustrate how clay modelling, communal song, oral storytelling, sand drawing, and traditional movement function as rigorous pedagogical tools in under-resourced settings. The chapter introduces the Communal Facilitator as a reconceptualised practitioner identity and proposes a two-stage reform grounded in Ubuntu philosophy, Asset-Based Pedagogy, and pluriversal epistemology.</jats:p>
