Abstract

Geopolitical shocks, security crises, and prolonged regional instability increasingly shape tourism demand by intensifying national identity salience, perceived threat, media-driven risk interpretation, and moral judgments about where one should travel. Although consumer ethnocentrism has been widely examined in international marketing, tourism ethnocentrism remains insufficiently integrated with crisis communication, destination image, consumer animosity, perceived risk, boycott behavior, media framing, and destination brand resilience. This chapter develops an integrative conceptual review of how ethnocentric responses shape tourism behavior under geopolitical crisis. It argues that crisis conditions can transform tourism ethnocentrism from a relatively stable domestic preference into an interpretive lens through which tourists evaluate destinations in terms of loyalty, safety, legitimacy, and out-group association.
