Gendered Dimensions of Digital Inequality

<jats:p>The transformation in digital technology is changing employment patterns worldwide, offering significant opportunities to individuals with high levels of digital skills. However, girls and women are unable to take full advantage of these opportunities due to digital inequality. Digital inequality is a multidimensional phenomenon with a gender dimension. This study aims to examine the impacts of digital inequalities on female employment in Türkiye from a gender perspective. This study employs a qualitative approach and uses literature review and secondary data analysis. The findings unearthed six key mechanisms that explain the impact of digital inequality on female employment in the country: the education and digital knowledge gap; labor market segregation; heavy domestic workload and time poverty; spatial inequalities and regional development; social structure; patriarchal norms; and wage inequality. Moreover, this study contradicts the general argument that “digitalization will create social equality”, underlining the urgent need for gender-based digitalization policies in Türkiye.</jats:p>
