Abstract
This chapter examines Waltz with Bashir (2008) through the lens of journalism studies, documentary theory, and visual culture to explore how contemporary visual media represent memory, violence, and ethical responsibility. Moving beyond traditional understandings of eyewitness authority and documentary objectivity, the chapter introduces reflexive visual witnessing as a framework for analyzing representations that acknowledge mediation, uncertainty, and ethical implication. Using discourse and content analysis, the study examines key sequences from the film, focusing on animation as an epistemological intervention, the filmmaker-journalist as a compromised witness, and the politics of visibility. The chapter argues that Waltz with Bashir challenges conventional assumptions regarding visual evidence and journalistic authority while offering broader implications for citizen witnessing, immersive journalism, and emerging forms of digital storytelling.
