Abstract

This chapter investigates the pedagogical implications of artificial intelligence (AI) within teaching English to young learners (EYL). The authors draw on contemporary research in the field AI-mediated education, addressing the potential of tools for lesson planning, language input and learner engagement with materials. The implications of reducing teacher workload, personalization of materials, and support for motivation building through gamified and interactive learning experiences, as potential of AI tools are discussed. In addition, important considerations related to ethics, cultural representations and data safety concerning child centered AI related resource and considered pedagogies are highlighted. The chapter concludes that AI works best as a co-creative partner enhancing teacher knowledge rather than replacing the teacher. Finally, the chapter finishes with ideas for future research, suggestions for teacher education, and recommendations for policy that supports equitable, reflective, and human-centered AI integration into early language education.
