Seeing the Unseen

<jats:p>This chapter examines how magical realist cinema renders structural violence visible where realist representation reaches its limits. Structural violence, produced by social arrangements rather than a single perpetrator, resists conventional narrative form: it leaves no scene of the crime and unfolds across a timescale ordinary causality cannot hold. This chapter argues that magical realism, through the intrusion of the supernatural and the materialization of memory as spectral presence, gives cinema a formal means of overcoming this problem. The analysis develops three functions, the legibility of the invisible, the persistence of traumatic memory, and the resistance of the subaltern imagination, traced across four films: Pan's Labyrinth (2006), Beloved (1998), Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010), and The Headless Woman (2008), engaging fascism, slavery, state terror, and class dispossession. The chapter concludes that magical realism works less as escapism than as political witness, making visible what dominant histories are arranged to leave unseen.</jats:p>
