Abstract

Educators everywhere seek to nurture students towards success. But how can they make this happen? A recent line of research has aimed to understand what messages teachers can say to students to ensure such success. Encouraging students to engage in learning-related activities, warning them about the negative impacts of failure and the strategies needed to circumvent it, or showing them, a true understanding of their perspective have proven to be relevant messages within the classroom context. Based on a broad range of frameworks, such as self-determination theory, mindsets research, socio-emotional learning or health promotion literature, teacher messages have proven essential for several educational outcomes such as motivation, academic performance, and well-being. This chapter reviews these approaches to the study of teacher messages and explores potential avenues for future research. Since language serves as the main vehicle for teachers to convey their thoughts that students can comprehend, mastering this fundamental and immediate resource should be among every educator's goals.
