AI Governance in Academia

<jats:p>The ability to add artificial intelligence (AI) to higher education institutions in the entire public sector has opened up never-before opportunities to personalised learning, administrative efficiency and evidence-based policy-making. However, such opportunities are kept in company with serious governance issues that relate to transparency, fairness and institutional accountability. The chapter examines ethical strains that are inherent in utilisation of AI systems in the evaluation of students, collection of admission details, and distribution of resources, and argues that without the presence of robust governance architectures these systems have a risk of entrenching the existing inequalities and also eroding democratic educational values. The chapter is based on a multi-layered governance model which incorporates regulatory compliance, stakeholder participation, algorithmic auditing, and continuous ethics oversight.</jats:p>
