Abstract

This chapter explores the human and ethical implications of algorithmic management and the possibility for meaningful work in an age of algocracy. Algocracy refers to organizational environments where algorithms function as central regulatory mechanisms. The growing reliance on algorithmic decision-making introduces challenges related to agency, transparency, responsibility, and autonomy. The reign of algocracy also leads to “ethical residue”, referring to the gap between quantified organizational performance metrics and the lived experience of value produced through everyday collegial acts of support. Contemporary organizations privilege outputs and performance indicators as primary indicators of success. Yet, organizational functioning depends equally on forms of contribution that resist measurement such as informal mentoring, discretionary judgment, and relational care. Recognizing this residue is essential for sustaining organizations that are efficient, morally responsible, and capable of supporting meaningful collective work in the algorithmic age.
