Abstract
Urban lakes are a significant component of the city environment, but at the same time, these water bodies are vulnerable to fecal contamination. This article systematizes current approaches to sanitary-microbiological assessment of freshwater recreational waters, compares Russian hygienic requirements with international standards, and presents practice-oriented laboratory methods with a focus on highly turbid/particle-rich waters. The review indicates that the principal indicators of fecal contamination and the associated risk of gastrointestinal infections are total coliforms, Escherichia coli, and enterococci, whereas coliphages are informative for the viral component. The paper highlights the advantages of Most Probable Number (MPN) - based methods and the multiple-tube fermentation technique as equivalent alternatives to membrane filtration for heavily contaminated/turbid waters. Recommendations are proposed for organizing urban-lake monitoring (seasonality, post-rainfall sampling events, and selection of sampling sites).
