Abstract

The volume analyzes the mediating role played by academies and intellectual centres (including informal ones) between Italian and Spanish culture during the "long" 18th century. In the field of current critical and historiographical literature, this is the first systematic attempt to establish, with an interdisciplinary perspective, which academic contexts most consistently performed this function of cultural mediation and, therefore, which models of intellectual sociability represented a reference model both in Italy and in the Iberian world. In addition, the volume offers a general examination of the concrete functioning of intellectual sociability, both in the Spanish monarchy and in the ancient Italian states, through a large number of significant case studies.
