Abstract
The article is devoted to two interpretations of the spiritual poem “On the Mountain, Listen, on the Hill,” recorded in the village of Karsovai in the Balezinsky District of Udmurtia in 2001. The article provides an analysis of the verbal and musical features of both interpretations, including their melodies, modes, intonations, and phonetics. Several factors have significantly influenced the variations in the performance of the verbal and musical text of this folklore piece. This is a significant difference in the age of the informants, as well as the individual tuning of auditory musical memory, which is associated with different perceptions of the genre orientation of the musical text. The musical fabric of the spiritual verse, performed by an older woman, is more focused on the principles of ancient Russian singing of folklore spiritual and liturgical works. In the interpretation of another singer, the musical, rhythmic, and poetic features of the spiritual verse are closer to the style of lyrical song. The findings obtained by the methods of holistic, comparative-contrastive, chronological, and musical motif analysis allowed to describe the influence of sensual and figurative memory on the specifics of the informants’ performing singing styles, as well as on the correlation of one musical-poetic work with different folklore genres. The analysis of N. E. Vlasova’s performing version revealed some patterns in the use of the interjection “oh” in the texts of this spiritual verse, the lyrical song “Oh, on the mountains, on the mountains,” and in songs of other genres.
