Abstract
This article examines one of Hesse’s (1877-1962) most original works - the Indian prose poem «Siddhartha» (1922). The unique philosophy of this text, which not only recreates an oriental flavor but also interprets the foundations of India and China spiritual teachings, has consistently attracted the attention of researchers and readers, making this work particularly relevant. Its novelty lies in a detailed exploration of the synthesis of Eastern and Western philosophy, which has been understudied in Russian literary studies. Attention is paid to Goethe's works related to Eastern themes, which had a significant impact on Hesse’s creativity. The elements of the ancient texts of the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, which are intertwined with Christianity and Nietzschean philosophy in «Siddhartha», illustrate the correlation of Eastern teachings with the spiritual world of Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. It is proved that Hesse’s synthesis of Eastern and Western cultures can be considered an authentic philosophical intention, a unity that is expressed by one of the writer’s most mystical characters - Siddhartha.
