Abstract
The article presents an extensive review of the comprehensive edition of the fragments of Aristoxenus of Tarentum prepared by the Austrian scholar Stefan Kaiser (“Die Fragmente des Aristoxenos aus Tarent,” 2022). It examines the place of this work within the history of publications devoted to the Aristoxenian corpus, analyzes the principles governing the selection, classification, and chronological arrangement of the fragments, and discusses the main tenets of Kaiser’s interpretation, particularly his attempt to reconsider the established view of Aristoxenus as a direct follower of Aristotle. The reviewer argues that Kaiser’s effort to align Aristoxenus more closely with the Pythagorean tradition and to reconstruct his “literary persona” on the basis of the “Fragments” is ultimately unconvincing. Special attention is drawn to Kaiser’s underestimation of the significance of Aristoxenus’s two partially preserved treatises, “Elementa Harmonica” and “Elementa Rhythmica,” which survive as relatively coherent texts and provide crucial evidence for understanding his intellectual position. The review also identifies numerous substantial shortcomings of the edition, including questionable textual decisions, deficiencies in the commentary, and problems in the handling and interpretation of the source material.
