Abstract

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics marked a pivotal moment in the history of sports broadcasting, as it became the first "Streaming Olympics" with unprecedented digital viewership growth. This paper examines the application and impact of digital streaming technology in sports broadcasting, using the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as a case study. Specifically, it analyzes the OBS Cloud, developed through collaboration between the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), and Alibaba, which enabled remote production capabilities and significantly reduced on-site infrastructure requirements. The study also explores the Content+ platform, which accelerated content delivery and provided broadcasters with near real-time access to event segments. Furthermore, it investigates how digital streaming platforms such as Peacock transformed the viewing experience by offering on-demand services, personalized content, and enhanced audience interactivity, contrasting these innovations with traditional television broadcasting limitations. Finally, the paper addresses emerging challenges, particularly piracy, and discusses the future trajectory of sports broadcasting in the context of upcoming major events like Paris 2024. The findings suggest that cloud-based streaming technology is redefining sports broadcasting standards, fostering greater efficiency, sustainability, and audience engagement, while also necessitating robust security measures to protect content integrity.
