Abstract

The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in linguistics research has revolutionized the study of values embedded within language. This article centres on the application of the AntConc corpus manager as the primary ICT instrument for analysing values in discourse, illustrating its methodological contribution to value-oriented linguistic research. It examines how digital corpora, computational linguistics, and data visualization techniques contribute to identifying and interpreting values in various contexts. The study employs discourse analysis and thematic analysis as primary methodologies for exploring values, providing a nuanced understanding of how individuals express and embody their values in everyday interactions. Discourse analysis serves as a foundational tool for uncovering values embedded in language and communication patterns. By analyzing the structure and context of discourse, explicit expressions of values can be identified. Thematic analysis, on the other hand, allows for a more in-depth exploration of underlying themes and patterns in discourse, revealing implicit values that may be subtly conveyed through language use. Furthermore, the article discusses the process of coding both explicit and implicit values in discourse. Coding explicit values (codes in vivo) involves identifying and categorizing overt expressions of values. Сoding implicit values requires a more nuanced approach, focusing on underlying meanings and providing descriptive codes that are generated inductively from the data. The research highlights the importance of the AntConc corpus manager in handling large datasets, enabling researchers to uncover value-laden patterns in discourse. By showcasing specific case studies and practical applications, the article demonstrates the transformative impact of ICT on the field of linguistics, particularly in the context of value research in discourse studies. The interdisciplinary findings underscore the potential of ICT, with corpus managers playing a central role, to deepen understanding of how values are constructed, communicated, and perceived across diverse linguistic environments.
