Abstract
Abstract. The article addresses the issue of preserving military-historical documentary heritage during the period of the Second Ukrainian People’s Republic (November 1918 – November 1920). It identifies and analyzes the measures undertaken in this field by the Ukrainian authorities. The purpose of the article is to highlight, on the basis of source analysis and historiographical achievements, the process of preserving military-historical documentary heritage during the specified period. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, comprehensiveness, and integrity, employing methods of analysis and synthesis, as well as problem-chronological and retrospective approaches. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the topic outlined in the title has not previously been the direct subject of study by Ukrainian scholars. Conclusions. Despite the difficult and unfavorable military-political situation, the Second Ukrainian People’s Republic did not neglect archival affairs and the preservation of military-historical documentary heritage. These issues were primarily handled by the Military-Historical Directorate of the General Staff of the Army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, within which the Main Military-Historical Archive functioned. Given the challenging circumstances, they conducted an adequate audit of the condition of military-historical materials. During the autumn of 1919, a number of orders were issued aimed at improving the preservation of these documents. Both central and local authorities and administrative bodies of the Second Ukrainian People’s Republic were involved in this work. In 1920, activities in this field continued. At the same time, in view of the unfavorable developments on the anti-Bolshevik front, efforts to preserve military-historical documents also created the preconditions for their transfer to Poland and for the establishment in exile of the Main Military-Historical Museum-Archive of the Army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1921.
