Abstract
<p>This paper introduces the Fallen Angel Within as a concept for explaining how symbolic identity can support theory generation under conditions of institutional authority, social exclusion, and epistemic conflict. The term does not refer to a religious being. It denotes a symbolic identity through which an individual gains psychological distance from institutions, norms, paradigms, or authorities perceived as absolute and thereby preserves the capacity to observe, question, conceptualize, and formulate alternative explanations. In this framework, “God” refers to authority placed beyond criticism, while “fall” denotes psychological disengagement from that authority rather than moral decline. Drawing on symbolic interactionism, identity theory, narrative identity, conceptual metaphor theory, creativity research, the sociology of knowledge, minority influence, and employee voice studies, the paper develops a Theory Generator Model. The model describes a recursive process in which symbolic identity creates distance from authority and enables discrepancies between official accounts and direct observation to remain unresolved long enough to become questions. When recurring events are compared, these questions may lead to structural awareness, conceptualization, and the externalization of theory in forms that others can examine and criticize. Historical comparisons involving Socrates, Galileo, Darwin, Marx, and Einstein illustrate different forms of cognitive distance from dominant assumptions without reducing these figures to a single heroic type. Generative AI is treated not as the origin or agent of theory generation, but as a cognitive amplifier that can accelerate information organization, comparative analysis, conceptual development, and writing. The Fallen Angel Within does not guarantee truth or confer epistemic privilege. Its value lies in keeping questions open and carrying them into spaces where observation, evidence, criticism, and revision remain possible.</p>
