Abstract

To investigate awe in a culture-sensitive manner, we wanted to understand the nuances of its German translation, ehrfurcht. This study explores the current meaning, perception, and contexts of ehrfurcht in nature. We conducted N = 21 semi-structured interviews with 11 female and 10 male German-speaking participants, who had an affinity for nature. Qualitative content analysis revealed that ehrfurcht is a rarely used term that encompasses respectfully marveling at nature, being humble, and accepting one’s smaller significance. Two types of the ehrfurcht perception emerged: temporary (i.e., short-term) and attitudinal (i.e., longer-lasting). Temporary Ehrfurcht involved the themes Extraordinary Qualities of Perception, Interacting with Nature as Counterpart, and Religiosity, Spirituality, and Mindfulness, and Accommodation of Outlook on Life. Attitudinal Ehrfurcht involved Companionship with Nature, Considering oneself to be Integrated into Nature, Being Limited as Human Compared to Nature, and Acknowledging Nature’s Transcendence. Contexts of Temporary Ehrfurcht were linked to Diverse Perceptions of Nature, Being Physically Surrounded by Nature, and Sufficient Attention for Nature. Contexts of Attitudinal Ehrfurcht were embedded in multiple areas of life, such as consumption, behavior towards other living beings or education. This study provides a foundation for further ehrfurcht research and cross-cultural comparisons.
