Abstract
<p>Vocabulary knowledge correlates strongly with general language skills, which is why vocabulary testshave been used as a proxy for language proficiency. Recently, tests in several languages have beendeveloped to quickly and reliably assess vocabulary knowledge by means of the visual lexical decisiontask. However, such a test does not currently exist for Swedish, a language that is not only spoken inSweden, but also by a large minority group in Finland. Lexize-SWE was designed to address this gap.Lexize-SWE is a 10-minute online test that consists of 52 words and 26 pseudowords. Item performancewas tested with L1 and L2 speakers from both Sweden and Finland (N = 441), followed by a validationwith a new sample (N = 342). The results indicate that the test distinguishes between L1 and L2 speakers.In L1 speakers, the scores were predicted by age and self-ratings in Swedish. L1 variety (SwedenSwedish vs. Finland Swedish) was not associated with the test scores. In L2 speakers, the test scoreswere predicted by self-ratings, exposure, daily usage of Swedish, language status (L2 speakers with andwithout immigrant background), and educational level. In addition, Lexize-SWE scores showed amoderate correlation with an external Swedish vocabulary test (SweLT). However, the backgroundfactors predicted Lexize-SWE scores more strongly than SweLT scores. Overall, Lexize-SWE appearssuitable for assessing print vocabulary knowledge, particularly in L2 speakers, and is applicable acrossboth Sweden and Finland contexts.
