Abstract
<p>The International Cognitive Ability Resource 16 (ICAR-16) is a public-domain measure of cognitive ability. However, no Italian validation currently exists. We translated and validated the ICAR-16 in a sample of 486 Italian adults (66% females), who completed the ICAR-16 and the long version of the Cognitive Reflection Test online. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the original hierarchical structure, with the Second-Order Latent Variable model (CFI=.98; TLI=.98) showing the best fit. Moreover, the ICAR-16 correlates strongly with the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) (ϕ= .81; 95% CI: .75, .86), confirming convergent validity. Internal consistency reliability was also adequate (ωt = .82; ωh = .59; α= .78). Measurement invariance analyses supported partial scalar invariance across sexes, with no further decrement in fit indexes for strict invariance. Only one item (MR47) exhibited uniform Differential Item Functioning. Overall, these findings support the Italian ICAR-16 as a reliable, freely available instrument for cognitive assessment in research.</p>
