Abstract

Catatonia recovers through capacities returning in a fixed dependency order, andbenzodiazepines and electroconvulsive therapy work without a known target. On an evidence-coupled bistable cascade over that order we take three quantities to be externally accessible: the root capacity, the coupling between capacities, and accumulated evidence. Here we show thatevidence has no external port and the other two act on disjoint regions. While every capacity is below threshold, a maximum principle forbids non-negative diffusive coupling, on any graph and either direction, from crossing the switching surface, so acute conversion needs an excursion, whereas an additive excitatory drive converts on its own. Above one exact criterion, the prevailing threshold squared over four, propagation separates into immediate, metastable and confined. On the modelled branch coupling alone shifts the resting first stage, so a treatment effective in both states is predicted to have separable excursion and coupling components, identifiable in model coordinates.
