Abstract

The article examines several aspects of the uprising of an infantry division led by Otaman Nykyfor Hryhoriev against Soviet authority between 7 and 22 May 1919. The study analyzes the causes of his revolt, characterizes Hryhoriev’s Universal to the Ukrainian People, and highlights a number of measures undertaken by the Soviet government both to suppress Hryhoriev’s uprising and to prevent similar manifestations in the future. The purpose of the article is to identify and analyze particular aspects of Nykyfor Hryhoriev’s anti-Soviet uprising on the basis of documentary sources and a range of narrowly specialized historiographical studies produced during both the Soviet period and within contemporary Ukrainian historiography. The principal methodological foundations of the research are the principles of historicism and scholarly objectivity. The study employs methods of information analysis, structural-systemic analysis, chronological analysis, and comparative-historical analysis. Post-positivism was selected as the leading methodological framework of the article, as the author considers it the most appropriate approach for the examination of specific historical subjects, one of which constitutes the focus of this study. In addressing the chosen topic, the methodology of post-positivism relies upon a number of principles of scholarly analysis aimed at clarifying the conditions of the emergence, development, and consequences of the events, phenomena, and processes under investigation, as well as understanding their causal relationships. It also draws upon three groups of methods and techniques of scholarly inquiry: general logical, socio-historical, and interdisciplinary approaches. The scholarly novelty of the article lies in the presentation and analysis of a number of narrowly specialized works from both the Soviet and post-Soviet periods, as well as the principal document of Hryhoriev’s uprising – the Universal of Otaman Hryhoriev to the Ukrainian People – through which specific aspects of the events of 7–22 May 1919 were identified. As a result, the facts presented in this article once again demonstrate the complexity of Nykyfor Hryhoriev’s anti-Soviet uprising as a historical phenomenon. The established interpretation of these events cannot be regarded as definitive. The potential of historical sources – above all documentary materials concerning Hryhoriev’s uprising – as well as the historiographical potential not only of contemporary Ukrainian scholarship but also of Soviet historiography related to the issues examined in this study, remains far from exhausted.
