Abstract

The article presents an expanded version of the topological theory of consciousness (TTC), which includes a generative level – recursive rules for generating discriminations. TTC asserts that consciousness emerges as a discrete phase transition (an ultrametric collapse) that is a projection of a higher-rank generative process. Unlike IIT, TTC explains not only the quantitative but also the qualitative characteristics of conscious states – unity, discreteness, the sense of subjective belonging, as well as the hierarchical complexity of thinking and creative abilities. The concept of generative 〖rank〗_r is introduced, with the minimum value for human consciousness equal to 6. This makes it possible to predict fractal properties of neurodynamics, the presence of the golden ratio in time intervals, and to explain the limits of cognitive complexity (Miller’s law). The theory receives empirical support from the studies of critical brain dynamics, psychotherapy, and psychopathology. The paper discusses experimental implications, including the operationalization of free will through Hick’s law and the phenomenon of ego depletion; presents recommendations for clinical practice.
