Three “Barcarolles” to poems by Emanuel Geibel: songs by Johanna Kinkel, Fanny Hensel (Mendelssohn), and Clara Schumann

<jats:p>The article is devoted to three vocal compositions based on the same poem by Emanuel Geibel, “Gondoliera”: namely, the “Barcarolles” by Johanna Kinkel, Fanny Hensel (Mendelssohn), and Clara Schumann. The purpose of the study is to identify the specific features of interpreting a single poetic text across individual compositional styles. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the comparative analysis of these compositions and the introduction of a little-studied repertoire into academic discourse. In this regard, the author touches upon the historical and cultural context, examines the specifics of the poetic source text, analyzes the musical form, and discusses the meter-rhythmic organization, melody, and harmony of each musical version. In the course of the study, it was established that the uniqueness of each work is determined by the nature of the interaction between the poetic word and music. The results obtained make it possible to clarify the place of the works under consideration in the context of 19th-century German vocal culture and to expand the understanding of the oeuvre of composers existing outside the main music-historical canon.</jats:p>
