Military commissar of EPRON A. P. Burachenko: pages from the biography of a party official

<jats:p>The aim of the research is a comprehensive reconstruction of the main stages of life and service activity of Alexander Petrovich Burachenko (1909–?) and the determination of his place in the system of Soviet party and political work of the 1930s-1950s. Based on documents from the Central State Archive of Historical and Political Documents of St. Petersburg, the Central Naval Archive, the Russian State Archive of the Navy, memoir literature, periodicals, and published sources not previously introduced into scientific discourse, his development as a party worker, service in the Navy, activities in the Leningrad party apparatus, and tenure as the first secretary of the Peterhof District Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) are traced. Special attention is paid to the period of the Great Patriotic War: A. P. Burachenko's work as a military commissar of the Leningrad Search and Rescue Department of the Expedition of Special Purpose Underwater Works (EPRON) of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet, participation in the construction of the Ladoga pipeline, and subsequent service in the political bodies of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet. His postwar work at the N. G. Kozitsky Plant No. 616 and activities in the party apparatus of the Estonian SSR are also examined. The scientific novelty lies in the first attempt to combine scattered information about A. P. Burachenko into a holistic historical and biographical study and to present his service trajectory as an example of a party worker's transfer between territorial, military, industrial, and republican structures. The role of A. P. Burachenko in the defense of Peterhof in the summer and autumn of 1941 is clarified, the content and conditions of his work in EPRON are revealed, and his direct participation in the construction of the underwater pipeline across Lake Ladoga is confirmed. It was established that his service in the search and rescue system of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet was accompanied by both commendations and complaints from the command. His subsequent military-political service and postwar party activities in the Estonian SSR were traced. The obtained results clarify the biography of A. P. Burachenko and complement the understanding of the functioning of the Soviet party-political apparatus in the prewar, war, and postwar periods.</jats:p>
