The political clash of ecclesiastical and civil authority in late antique Alexandria: the conflict of Patriarch Cyril and Prefect Orestes (412-415 CE)

<jats:p>The aim of this article is to determine the nature of the relationship between secular and ecclesiastical authority in late antique Alexandria through the case study of the conflict between Patriarch Cyril and Prefect Orestes (412-415 CE), by establishing the degree of responsibility of the church hierarch for the tragic death of the philosopher Hypatia. Scientific novelty lies in the following: the study establishes for the first time that the conflict between Alexandrian Patriarch Cyril and Prefect Orestes (412-415 CE) was not a religious (Christian‑pagan) confrontation, but rather a political clash between two centers of power in late antique Alexandria – ecclesiastical and civil – within which the tragic death of the philosopher Hypatia resulted from the struggle for political influence rather than from religious intolerance. Based on the testimonies of Socrates Scholasticus and other sources, the article demonstrates that the conflict was driven by a contest over jurisdiction concerning various population groups, and its escalation was largely connected with the intervention of Egyptian monasticism in this process. The research concludes that Cyril most likely did not issue a direct order for the murder of Hypatia; however, his policy of mobilizing the monastic community and inflaming passions against political opponents created an atmosphere of intolerance in which such a crime became possible. The long‑term consequence of the conflict was not the decline, but rather the transformation of Alexandrian intellectual life: paradoxically, the murder of Hypatia facilitated the unchecked growth of Iamblichean Neoplatonism in the city.</jats:p>
