CONSIDERATIONS ABOUT HANDHELD LASER BEAM WELDING (HLBW)

<jats:p>Handheld Laser Beam Welding (HLBW) is emerging in the welding, cutting and allied processes industry literally at the “speed of light”. By replacing the traditional electric welding arc with a highly focused, high-power laser beam, HLBW offers a wide range of potential benefits, including higher throughput, less straightening work due to lower heat input, and the use of less experienced personnel. However, welders still need to be qualified, especially to deal with the safety hazards of laser radiation. With proper education, training and guidance, HLBW will flourish in the welding, cutting and cleaning industries. This publication addresses various aspects of HLBW, the current state of the art, safety, quality considerations, and qualifications. The purpose of this document is to present general recommendations and best practice examples for laser safety, education, qualification, and metallurgical considerations related to HLBW. This document has been created by experts and is supported by IIW, EWF, EWA and AWS.</jats:p>
