Abstract

The advancement and increased use of supercapacitors present both an opportunity and a challenge from a sustainability perspective. While their advantages in energy storage applications are well recognized, but their end-of-life management remains an evolving and relatively underexplored area. Thus, the present review has attempted to bring together these fragmented insights and position them within a more comprehensive sustainability context. In this study, different supercapacitor recycling strategies are critically reviewed, and the key challenges in their implementation are discussed while evaluating them against battery recycling systems. Further, insights from different sustainability metrics are also provided to make an informed decision regarding the selection of appropriate technology for material recycling from supercapacitors. The study revealed that integrating recycling routes that combine mechanical, physical, thermal, and chemical processes in sequential or coupled flows yields higher recovery efficiency than any single technique. At last, the trade-offs and key challenges identified in the study will help in bridging the gap between advancing supercapacitor technologies and their end-of-life management, thereby supporting more sustainable recycling strategies.
