Abstract

The process pools of soil organic matter (OM), which determine its functionality, were studied in eluvozems and sod-eluvozems of forest ecosystems of the Zvenigorod Biological Station of Moscow State University. Microbial biomass was determined by the fumigation-extraction method, and potentially mineralizable OM was determined by the cumulative amount of emitted C-CO2 with the manometric method using the OxiTop Control OC110 (WTW) system in a long-term incubation experiment at constant temperature and moisture. The carbon content of microbial biomass decreases from 6230–7560 mg/kg in the litter to 1140–1200 mg/kg in the humus layer (0–10 cm) and rapidly decreases with depth, not exceeding 2,2– 5,2 % of organic carbon. The content of potentially mineralizable organic matter, equivalent to its active pool, reaches 2,8–7,7 g/kg or 11–29 % of organic carbon in the upper mineral layers and decreases to 0,16–0,20 g/kg and 8–11 %, respectively, with depth. The contents of organic, potentially mineralizable, and microbial carbon are closely related to each other and the intensity of mineralization.
