Abstract
In the 21st century in the interaction between cinema and musical theatre, there has been a trend of adapting feature films for the opera stage. This article examines Mikael Karlsson’s opera Melancholia (2023), based on Lars von Trier’s film of the same name (2011). The focus is on identifying similarities and differences in the poetics of the film and the opera. The opera retains the compositional structure of the original, its key images and ideas, based on the parallels between the death of the world and the destruction of Justine’s mental space (two melancholies—the planet and the mental state). At the same time, it eliminates certain scenes and characters, and adds new texts. The nature of the changes, on the one hand, indicates Karlsson’s desire to focus more on the inner world of the character, and on the other hand, influences his worldview: the composer opposes the empathic approach to the misanthropic position of the Danish director. The specifics of musical language and dramaturgy are largely determined by the visual and sound solutions of the film. The opera’s soundscape is based on a synthesis of acoustic (traditional orchestra, academic vocals) and artificial (synthesizers, phonograms) sounds, avant-garde dissonant language and the rhythms of rock music. The “personally decoding” of the visual codes of the film text in the second act (slow motion with a falling horse, references to the paintings of Bruegel and Millet) contributes to the expansion of the work’s semantic field and simultaneously serves as a means of retardation of the action. Thus, the medial possibilities of cinema become one of the factors in the renewal of the modern opera genre.
