Abstract

Activated carbon (AC) is a good non-polar material with high molecular adsorption capacity. Due to its large surface area, microporous structure, good adsorption efficiency and recyclability, make it suitable to use with various materials to adsorb organic contaminants in wastewater with different levels of concentrations. This article discusses the chemical composition of two common kinds of activated carbon: birch wood and coconut shell.  The result shows that the maximum electrical conductivity of the aqueous solution after contact with birch-based activated carbon was 978 μS/cm, and that of coconut was 98 μS/cm. This indicates that birch-based activated carbon has higher mineral content than coconut-based activated carbon. Finally, both birch-based activated carbon and coconut-based activated carbon are considered safe and environmentally friendly.
