Abstract
The article offers a comprehensive analysis of the political development of the Tver Principality during the reign of Mikhail Yaroslavich of Tver (1285–1317) through the prism of his political activity and the images of his rule reflected in the Tver narrative tradition. Early sources indicate that Mikhail pursued an independent and far-sighted policy aimed at strengthening his principality in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. He not only opposed the princes of Vladimir, Dmitry Alexandrovich and Andrei Gorodetsky, but at times also supported them and de facto led the Moscow-Tver alliance. From 1305 to 1317, Mikhail Yaroslavich occupied the throne of the Grand Principality of Vladimir and was among the first rulers to pursue a large-scale all-Russian policy among the principalities of Rus'. He was also the first to adopt the official title “Grand Prince of All Rus',” a title recognized not only by the princes of Northeastern Rus' but also by the Novgorod veche. A similar policy was pursued in relation to the Church, which marks him out as an outstanding ruler of his age. The prince’s decisive actions in the conflict with Yuri Danilovich were conditioned by his conviction that he was following God’s truth, rooted in the evangelical motif of self-sacrifice for the faith and the people of the Tver Principality. Mikhail’s reign generated images that occupy an important place in Russian history and in the preservation of historical memory: those of a defender of the Fatherland, a merciful peacemaker, and a saint.
