Cultural Memory of the Events of 1974 in the Press of the Republic of Cyprus and the Ethnic Identity of Greek Cypriots

<jats:p>The article examines the role of the press in the Republic of Cyprus in shaping and reproducing cultural memory of the events of 1974 and its influence on the ethnic identity of the Greek Cypriot community. Based on an analysis of articles published in the newspapers Phileleftheros and Politis in July 2026, the study ex-plores the main narratives, symbols, and modes of representing the past in media discourse. The theoretical framework of the research is based on the concepts of cultural memory, collective identity, and the mediatiza-tion of social reality. Particular attention is paid to representations of victimhood, historical trauma, responsibil-ity, and intergenerational continuity. The analysis demonstrates that the press serves not only as a means of conveying information about the past but also as a mechanism for constructing collective perceptions of the events of 1974, thereby contributing to the preservation and reproduction of the Greek Cypriot ethnocultural identity.</jats:p>
