Dean Rusk’s Diplomacy: The US State Department during the Cuban Missile Crisis

<jats:p>The article examines the role of the US State Department under the leadership of Dean Rusk during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. Based on archival documents, memoirs of participants in the events, and mod-ern historical research, the article analyzes key diplomatic initiatives, negotiation strategies, and operational crisis management led by the American statesman. Particular attention is paid to the Secretary of State Dean Rusk interaction with President Kennedy, Soviet diplomats, and US national security structures. Aim: analyze Dean Rusk’s influence on the settlement of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis relying on documents, personal sources, and historiography. The article provides an analysis of documents as well as of the contemporaries and researchers’ views on the role of Dean Rusk in the resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis published in Rus-sian and English from XX century to the present. The main results of the article can be used by researchers on the issues of the Cold War, the history of American diplomacy for a more complete understanding of its capaci-ty in the crisis conditions presented by archives, sources, and historiography.</jats:p>
