From Narrative to Visual Style: Artistic Means of Expressing Parent-Child Relationships in Chinese and Russian Cinema

<jats:p>The article examines artistic means of expressing parent-child relationships in Chinese and Russian cinema. Based on cultural and comparative analysis, as well as elements of film language, narrative models of family depictions on screen are identified, linked to the continuity of values across generations, potential conflict be-tween “fathers” and “children,” the loss of mutual trust, and inevitable reconciliation. Particular attention is paid to visual style, including frame space, color, light, the environment, gesture, and silence as means of conveying familial intimacy, the distance between subjects of different ages, and intergenerational memory. Conclusion dwells upon the fact that in Chinese and Russian cinema, parent-child relationships serve not only as a plot theme but also as a form of artistic expression of cultural values and national identity.</jats:p>
