Abstract

This work touches upon the dynamics of the reaction of Japanese newspapers and TV channels to the begin-ning of military conflicts from 2003 (the Iraq War) to 2026 (the US invasion of Venezuela). The author analyzes the publications of some of the largest Japanese newspapers and TV channels: Asahi Shimbun, Yomiuri Shimbun, NHK, Nikkei, Toyo Keizai, TBS TV. Critical discourse analysis is used as a method. The most vivid and emotionally colored marker words are isolated from the texts, indicating the attitude of the authors to a par-ticular event and participants in the conflict. In the early 2000s, Japanese media demonstrated the ability for independent assessment of the situation. By the early 2010s, Japanese media lost these qualities and started to broadcast the Western agenda. Nevertheless, by the mid-2020s, Japanese newspapers and TV channels partially moved away from the globalist course and once again began to criticize the United States. This re-markable fact confirms the nonlinear development of the socio-political position of the mainstream media in Japan.
