Autism s Paradoxical Nature: Understanding Contradictory Characteristics

<jats:p xml:lang="tr">Autism-specific traits and the behaviours associated with them often give rise to dilemmas that can be conceptualized as paradoxes. These paradoxical patterns are characterized by the coexistence of marked cognitive or social challenges alongside unusual or exceptional abilities within the same individual. Such dualities highlight the complexity and heterogeneity of autism and underscore the need for integrative conceptual frameworks. Positioned as a conceptual theoretical discussion, this article draws on literature from neuroscience, developmental psychology, education, and philosophy to reconceptualize autism through the organizing lens of paradox. Drawing on theoretical perspectives such as Kapur’s “Paradoxical Brain” framework, the review illustrates how functional neurodevelopmental imbalances may simultaneously contribute to both strengths and limitations across developmental domains. Rather than providing a purely descriptive overview, this review integrates existing literature to identify recurring paradoxical patterns in autism and examines their implications for daily life, diagnostic practices, and individualized intervention strategies. Understanding the paradoxical dimensions of autism is essential for moving beyond deficit-oriented models, optimizing individual strengths, and developing more inclusive and responsive support systems. By highlighting both individual and societal implications, this theoretical discussion aims to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of autistic experiences and capacities and to inform future research and practice.</jats:p>
